You know that feeling when you're not quite sure if something will live up to the hype—and then it completely blows your expectations out of the water? That’s exactly how Welcome Stone felt for me.
It’s tucked away in Grenada’s lush north, perched high above Levera National Park, and I’m telling you—it might just be one of the most stunning views on the island. Best part? It’s pretty easy to reach, not crowded, and free. Yes, free!
The Journey There
Let’s clear something up right away: Welcome Stone is not a long hike. We were expecting a somewhat long, moderate trek, but really, it was 10 minutes of rocky exploration once we parked at the top. I also brought my dog, Roxie, along for this adventure and she loved it.
That being said, where you park matters. You can drive most of the way, but the final stretch is a pretty steep hill —you’ll want a 4x4 car that can handle it. However, at the end of the road, there will be a wire fence where there is very little room to park and turn around, which you will have to do as you leave so just keep that in mind. We decided to turn the car around and park at an angle so the car didn't roll down the hill while we were exploring.
If you're unsure or driving a small rental, no worries! Just park at the bottom of the hill and walk up—it’ll only take you about 15 minutes, more or less. It’s a bit of a climb but it’s manageable and so worth it!
Once you park, or walk to the top of the hill, you will walk around the left side of the fence to the back side where you will find the trail entrance marked by a narrow space between rocks and rocky steps at the start. Don't be nervous, you have arrived at the right spot! The trail starts with a rope that guides you along, but then it disappears and we were on our own for the final duration of the trek with one or two spots of uncertainty and redirection due to a brief fading of the trail. And surprisingly, we never lost phone signal, which was great in case we needed to navigate or call anyone.
The View…
As soon as we reached the Welcome Stone viewpoint, all the climbing (and sweating) was forgotten. You're standing on a rock ledge, looking out over the northern coast of Grenada—Levera Beach, Sugar Loaf Island, Green Island, and on a clear day, you can even spot Carriacou. The sea sparkles, the breeze cools you down, and you feel like you’re on top of the world.
When we went, there was only one other group there, and we stumbled across them as they were leaving, so we had the entire scene to ourselves making the experience even more peaceful! It felt like our own little secret. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to pause and just breathe.
Make It a Full Day!
If you’re heading to Welcome Stone, I suggest making a little adventure out of it!
Head down to Levera Beach, where the waves crash beautifully and (if you visit from March to August) you might even spot leatherback turtles nesting. Stop by River Antoine Rum Distillery for a quick tour of one of the oldest working distilleries in the Caribbean. We stopped right before the Grand Etang entrance at the ticket booth to see one of the Mona Monkeys! Finish the afternoon at Bathway Beach—another hidden gem that’s perfect for relaxing and grabbing lunch from a local food shack.
Welcome Stone is one of those Grenadian gems that doesn’t require a big hike or a big budget—but still gives you a top-tier travel memory. It’s peaceful, beautiful, and feels like something out of a movie. Whether you’re a photographer, a nature lover, or just someone who wants a good view and a better story, this place delivers.
