Have you ever felt like you needed to escape the ordinary and discover a place that feels both wild and welcoming? Welcome to Grenada—the Spice Isle—which isn’t just about famous beaches and resorts, but also offers hidden gems that make every trip a real adventure.
I’ve been living in Grenada for a few years now, and one thing that always surprises visitors (and me, even after all this time) is just how much there is beyond the typical tourist spots. Sure, Grenada’s beautiful beaches and vibrant culture are well-known, but if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find secret waterfalls and local spots that make you feel like you’ve truly stepped into another world.
Exploring the Wild Side of Grenada
One of my absolute favorite discoveries here is the Upper Concord Waterfall.
Trust me, getting to this waterfall isn’t a stroll in the park—it’s a bit of a challenging hike through lush, tropical trails. But when you finally reach the cascade, all that effort is totally worth it. This powerful stream of water tumbles down moss-covered rocks, surrounded by vibrant green foliage and the distant sounds of nature made it such a beautiful and rewarding experience. It’s one of those experiences that hits you right in the heart, making you appreciate nature’s raw beauty in a way that no polished resort can.
While the hike might be a little tough, it’s also incredibly rewarding. If you’re up for a bit of adventure and don’t mind getting your hands (and shoes) a little dirty, this is a must-see. And don’t worry if you’re not a hardcore hiker—local guides can show you the best, safest routes so you can enjoy the experience without stressing about the logistics.
One of Grenada’s lesser-known treasures are the blowholes that are located along the island’s rugged coastline. I, and my furbaby Roxie, had the pleasure of visiting an incredible blowhole located in Petit Calivigny near Fort Jeudy Point that felt like a true break from society. It took a little searching to find, as the path is not clear and there is no designated parking, but that made it a much more interesting experience! The beautiful scenery made me want to go back again and again.
Every time the tide hit, the powerful waves burst through a narrow rocky opening, spraying a mist of salty air. It’s truly a must-see natural wonder for any adventure seeker.
It's a sight that showcases the raw power and beauty of nature, and I truly felt like I was experiencing the best of nature.
Savoring Grenadian Flavors
After your adventure, you might be craving something delicious to refuel. Grenada isn’t just a feast for the eyes—it’s a feast for the taste buds too! The island is famous for its spices, and you can experience this in the local cuisine. A visit to a local spot where you can try the national dish, Oil Down, is a must.
This hearty stew, made with breadfruit, salted meat, onion, carrot, celery, dasheen, dumplings, and a mix of spices boiled in coconut milk, perfectly captures the soul of Grenadian cooking. And while you're exploring, stop by one of the local markets in the city of St. George where vendors sell fresh tropical fruits and, of course, the island’s world-renowned nutmeg.
Immersing Yourself in Local Culture
What makes Grenada so special is its people. The locals have a warm, welcoming vibe that makes you feel right at home, even if you're a stranger in a new land. Take time to wander the streets of St. George’s, the capital, and discover hidden art galleries, local craft shops, and colorful murals that tell the story of the island’s rich history. You’ll find that every conversation with a local is like a mini-history lesson, full of stories about the island’s past and the traditions that still shape daily life.
And speaking of history, Grenada’s colonial past mingles with indigenous traditions to create a unique cultural tapestry. Whether you’re exploring ancient forts or simply enjoying a cup of locally brewed coffee in a quaint cafe, there’s a sense of authenticity here that you just can’t find in more commercialized destinations.
A Keepsake for Your Journey
One of the things I love most about Grenada is how it inspires you to capture every moment. That’s why I always recommend pairing your travels with a great travel journal or planner which is why I've created the Wander Without Limits planner. Not only does it help you organize your itinerary, but it also becomes a cherished keepsake filled with your own personal stories, photos, and reflections from your journey. It’s the perfect way to remember that challenging hike, the breathtaking waterfall, or that incredible meal that made you fall in love with the island all over again.
